She told us about the Caring House in North Carolina and the love, respect, and great care they showed her mother and father while her mother was in residence there. After reading her words, we decided to send our current stockpile of caps to the Caring House. Below is her message to us:

"The Caring House is much like a Ronald McDonald House for adults who
need housing while gaining treatment at Duke University. My mother and
father stayed there for close to two months while she was receiving a
new form of cancer treatment that's only done in Duke's medical
facility.

This "house" was incredible. It was not only an amazingly beautiful,
with lavish trees, fireplaces, common rooms, etc, but the love and
care that they give is amazing and selfless. It's completely
non-profit and it serves as a home for people who can not afford
temporary housing while getting treatment. It's run by volunteers who
have more kindness and patients of anyone I've ever come to know,
besides Hospice workers, but that's another post for another day.

In the back of the paper, there is a section for honorariums,
memorials and donations, listing the names of people who have stayed
at the Caring House, with a listing of names of the people who donated
in their honor. Most names had one or two donations, a few had three,
and one person had six. My mother had 11 people listed beneath her
name. I can't even begin to tell you what an amazing and overwhelming
feeling that was to see that so many people cared enough about my
mother, to donate in her honor.

If you want to donate (it doesn't have to be in my mother's honor),
they don't necessarily need monetary donations. Pots, pans, dishes,
cleaning supplies, books, videos, dvds, board games, puzzles,
stationery, bedding, anything and EVERYTHING would mean the world to
them, and the people who unfortunately have to live there. There
information is as follows:

Caring House, Inc.
2625 Pickett Rd
Durham, NC 27705

Tel: (919) 490-5449
Fax: (919) 493-8044"

The Gold Coast Huggers will be sending the caps off in time to arrive before Thanksgiving in honor of Sue Ellen Levine. If you have any caps to contribute, please get them to us soon to make this next shipment! Thanks to all for your support and contributions.skullyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02921545706337454636noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20012368.post-44976258103765679052007-10-29T20:05:00.001-07:002007-10-29T20:05:11.510-07:00Why we do this

chemocap
Originally uploaded by skullsnbats
Our friend and fellow knitter Gayle came to the Huggers for caps for her friend's sister, Alichia. We've got plenty to make more caps, so please ask at Knit Night if you would like some of it. Thank you so much, Margie & Jean!

While surfing knit blogs, we came across another great charity knitting group, Made By Hand. They are also making chemo caps this year, and we hope they get a lot of caps! They have a nice list of links to free cap patterns on the web, so stop by if you need a pattern or just to get inspired.

Finally, October is National Breast Cancer Awareness month. Making a chemo cap for someone is a very good way to contribute and get involved. If that's not possible, why not be passionately pink? Our dear friend Chasey, who is being treated at this center, took a beautiful load of caps there for us on July 3rd. The Center, which is South Florida's only university based cancer center, was very grateful for the caps and was delighted with the colorful assortment we made them.

Thanks to Ann, a very skilled lady who donated caps to us even though she doesn't even live in the area! Also thanks to B. Nash, who made a very generous donation of Fun Fur to be made into caps. Finally, our most recent thanks goes to L. Dellapenta, who today gave us a gift card to be used to buy yarn for more caps. You are all wonderful and your generous spirit is touching many lives.skullyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02921545706337454636noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20012368.post-1145204848891675162006-04-16T09:27:00.000-07:002006-04-16T09:27:28.926-07:00
A few of the new caps we have collected lately. skullyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02921545706337454636noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20012368.post-1144984149755587732006-04-13T20:05:00.000-07:002006-04-13T20:09:09.770-07:00Chemo Caps in the news"She knows a handmade cap is more than a head covering; it's also evidence of the good wishes of the person who made it."

That quote is so true. I think it is the main reason why our group feels so strongly about creating chemo caps for our community.

Read the whole article here about an amazing 11 year old girl who is creating and distributing chemo caps in her town in Ohio. Proof that nobody is too young or too old to make a difference!skullyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02921545706337454636noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20012368.post-1140039971607288942006-02-15T13:41:00.000-08:002006-02-15T13:46:11.620-08:00Our first delivery! We donated 38 caps to the Westside Regional Medical Center's Cancer Center in Plantation, FL on Valentine's Day. The staff was very happy and grateful and plans to distribute many of them through their support group, "Look Good, Feel Better". We are now gearing up to make our next batch . . . we'll be happy to take your donated caps or yarn!

We were also fortunate to have many crocheted caps donated to us from a sweet lady in Mississippi who heard about us via the Internet. We thank everyone who donated their caps, time, and expertise to make this Valentine's day a little warmer for 38 local patients.skullyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02921545706337454636noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20012368.post-1139419313349136892006-02-08T09:21:00.000-08:002006-02-08T09:21:53.370-08:00
Here is a cap knit with the donated yarn along with a crocheted flower. skullyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02921545706337454636noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20012368.post-1138716885363900522006-01-31T06:14:00.000-08:002006-01-31T06:14:52.050-08:00
Here is the yarn donated to us by Berroco. Aren't they great!skullyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02921545706337454636noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20012368.post-1138076574029672352006-01-23T20:15:00.000-08:002006-01-23T20:22:54.043-08:00Thanks Berroco! We are very grateful to Berroco for their very generous donation of five cones of Chinchilla yarn for chemo caps. They sent us the yarn UPS the same day we made our request! They are fantastic. This donation will keep us busy for quite some time! Chinchilla is one of the nicest yarns out there for knitting and crocheting chemo caps. If you haven't knitted with Chinchilla before, here is a great easy pattern that works up nicely with the yarn at the national Head Huggers site. You can see pictures of other chemo caps we have made on the Sweet Stitchin' Betties blog for more inspiration!skullyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02921545706337454636noreply@blogger.com0
